As a member of our team, you’ll work with world-renowned faculty and highly motivated staff and students dedicated to exploring the interconnections between politics, regulation, and the economy.

Research Professional

The Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and the State is looking for a highly skilled and motivated individual to work as full-time Research Professional starting in the 2026-2027 academic year. Research Professionals work with the Stigler Center Faculty Director and other affiliated faculty to collect and manage data, maintain databases, conduct statistical analyses and provide other key research support associated with faculty research and teaching.

The ideal candidate will have (i) a strong quantitative background; (ii) strong computer skills including programming (Python, R, Stata preferred); (iii) the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and work independently to solve problems; and (iv) experience creating reproducible, well-documented projects and managing advanced codebases strongly preferred.

Past Research Professionals have used a variety of techniques and tools to examine diverse questions. Examples of past tasks and projects include:

  1. Exploring the impact of various conflicts of interest on readers’ trust in academic research findings, uncovering significant nuances and implications for academia and policy
  2. Using natural language processing tools to identify news publications’ editorial biases for pro-business policies and political candidates.
  3. Investigating the influence of shareholder proposals and proxy statements on corporate annual reports to shareholders and how executive compensation is structured to reflect the objectives espoused in those letters.

Research Assistant 

Research assistants鈥 work varies greatly depending on the project, but may include data entry and library searches, data management and statistical estimations, helping set up online surveys or computer studies, or summarizing information from sources in languages other than English. Projects may be short-term or long-term, and some projects may require special skills, while others may be suitable for those without prior research experience. (Note: you must be a current University of Chicago student for this position.)

The Stigler Center seeks University of Chicago student RA support with varying volume and frequency throughout the year. After an applicant submits an RA application form, they will be added to an active directory of students interested in serving as Stigler Center research assistants. Our team will reach out to suitable candidates for projects as they become available.
