John Ehara, MBA ’78, started his career at Goldman Sachs and Co. in 1980. After moving to Tokyo in 1982, he played a key role in developing its Japanese franchise building an office from six people to approximately 1,000 when he retired in 1996.

Ehara co-founded Unison Capital in 1998, and it became a pioneer of private equity in Japan and is among the nation’s leading firms today. The firm expanded its operation to Korea in 2012. Ehara spearheaded the firm from its inception, building its team and operations. He stepped down in 2021. Ehara was also instrumental in establishing the Private Equity Association of Japan, serving as its first Chairman from 2005 to 2007, and again from 2013 to 2015.

Ehara has held numerous director and trustee positions, including at Sumitomo Corporation, The Asia Pacific Initiative (an independent think tank based in Tokyo), The International House of Japan, and International Business Council of the World Economic Forum. He has been a long-standing member of Asia Business Council, a private group of Asian business leaders, and has served as chairman for the same. Ehara serves as a member of the Council on Chicago Booth.

Ehara received a BS in Arts & Design and a BS in Civil Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
