Conference on Labor in the Age of Generative AI
The arrival of ChatGPT marks the new era of Generative AI. The Center for Applied AI (CAAI) brought together leading scholars to share their most recent research on the impact of generative AI on the labor market. Several insights emerged.
Generative AI is a general-purpose technology, and ChatGPT is now pervasive in the exposed occupations (; ). Tools like Github Copilot and ChatGPT have already boosted industry output and firm values (; ). Within occupations, Generative AI has the potential to decrease inequality by lifting workers with less prior expertise (; ). However, productive use of the tools requires workers to assess when to use them and for what purposes (; ). Furthermore, current adoption patterns have reinforced existing inequalities, with women and lower-earning workers much less likely to use ChatGPT ().
The conference participants discussed the future implications of this new stock of evidence.
