To earn an MBA concentration in healthcare, you’ll choose four courses to match your interests, including at least one core course, one elective course, and up to one lab course (project must be healthcare-related). Here are just a few of the options.
This course applies theoretical and empirical tools of microeconomics to the study of health insurance and the healthcare sector. The course covers topics including the demand for healthcare, design and financing of health insurance, role of competition in the healthcare market, sources of technological change in the sector, and effects of government regulations.
The life sciences include biotech, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and instruments, and healthcare IT. Covering both innovation and finance this course examines the various roles of leaders and investors in this industry. Students will learn to evaluate companies and deals from the perspectives of founders, VCs, the board, management, investment bankers, PE, and public/crossover investors.
Entrepreneurship in Healthcare and Life Sciences is designed to teach students to weave together the hard science that underlies research-driven enterprises with commercial, financial, and strategic elements required to create and evaluate business plans.
This course uses case studies and topical events to emphasize specific health challenges facing populations in low resource settings (here in the US and globally) and the large-scale social, political, and economic forces that contribute to them.
The New Venture Challenge course may be counted toward the healthcare concentration for students who work on healthcare-related ventures.
This course is designed to allow students who have advanced to the second round of the New Venture Challenge competition to develop their ideas into businesses. Student teams will work largely on their own to develop their businesses. Venture capitalists, private investors, and entrepreneurs will help critique and improve the ideas and businesses.
This course may be counted toward the healthcare concentration for students who participate in healthcare-related projects.
Through company-sponsored, real-world innovation projects, students gain an in-depth understanding of current practices in new-product development, especially in the early, up-front stages of product development. The Lab version of this course provides students with an in-depth understanding of state-of-the-art practices in new product/service innovation, with an emphasis on the early up-front stages of the innovation process using Design Thinking methods.
